The conditional (condicional simple)

Free Spanish grammar lesson · B1

Form

The conditional uses the same stem as the future with the endings of the imperfect -er / -ir verbs. Every single form carries an accent on the í.

Person Ending hablar comer vivir
yo -ía hablaría comería viviría
-ías hablarías comerías vivirías
él / ella / usted -ía hablaría comería viviría
nosotros/-as -íamos hablaríamos comeríamos viviríamos
vosotros/-as (Spain) -íais hablaríais comeríais viviríais
ellos / ellas / ustedes -ían hablarían comerían vivirían

The irregular stems are exactly the ones from the future: tendría, pondría, saldría, vendría, haría, diría, podría, sabría, querría, habría, valdría, cabría.

What it is used for

Use Example
politeness ¿Podrías ayudarme? — Could you help me?
a wish, softened Me gustaría un café. — I'd like a coffee.
advice Yo que tú, hablaría con ella. — If I were you, I'd talk to her.
a hypothetical result Con más tiempo, viajaríamos más. — With more time, we'd travel more.
a guess about the past Serían las diez cuando llegó. — It must have been ten when he arrived.
future seen from the past Dijo que vendría. — He said he would come.

Politeness

Spanish softens requests with the conditional far more than English does. Quiero un café is not rude, but Me gustaría un café or ¿Me pondría un café? is what you hear in a shop or an office.

  • ¿Te importaría cerrar la ventana? — Would you mind closing the window?
  • ¿Sería posible cambiar la cita? — Would it be possible to change the appointment?
  • Deberías descansar más. — You should rest more.

With si-clauses

The conditional gives the result; the si clause takes the imperfect subjunctive, never the conditional itself.

  • Si tuviera dinero, viajaría por Asia. — If I had money, I'd travel around Asia.
  • Si fueras más paciente, todo sería más fácil. — If you were more patient, everything would be easier.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • "Would" for a past habit is the imperfect. English uses the same word for both. ✗ De niño iríamos a la playa cada verano. / ✓ De niño íbamos a la playa cada verano.
  • Never put the conditional after si.Si tendría tiempo, iría. / ✓ Si tuviera tiempo, iría.
  • The stem is the future stem.Yo hacería, yo podería / ✓ Yo haría, yo podría.
  • Watch the accent. Comería (conditional) and comía (imperfect) differ by one syllable and mean different things: "I would eat" vs "I used to eat".

Example dialogue

¿Podrías echarme una mano el sábado? — Could you give me a hand on Saturday?
Me encantaría, pero trabajo por la mañana. — I'd love to, but I'm working in the morning.
¿Y por la tarde? — And in the afternoon?
Sí. Yo que tú, llamaría también a Sergio. — Yes. If I were you, I'd call Sergio too.
Buena idea. Con su furgoneta sería mucho más rápido. — Good idea. With his van it would be much quicker.
