The verb goes to the end
A subordinate clause (Nebensatz) is introduced by a subordinating conjunction, and it sends the conjugated verb to the very end of its own clause. A comma always separates it from the main clause.
- Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. — I'm staying home because I'm ill.
- Ich weiß, dass du Recht hast. — I know that you're right.
- Ich frage, ob der Kurs morgen stattfindet. — I'm asking whether the course takes place tomorrow.
The four conjunctions
| Conjunction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| weil | because | Er schläft, weil er müde ist. |
| dass | that | Sie glaubt, dass es regnet. |
| wenn | if, when (repeated) | Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich. |
| ob | whether, if (question) | Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt. |
obwohl (although) and da (since) work the same way.
More than one verb at the end
If the clause has two verb parts, the conjugated one goes last and the other stands just before it.
| Main clause | Subordinate clause |
|---|---|
| Ich muss morgen arbeiten. | ..., weil ich morgen arbeiten muss. |
| Ich bin zu spät aufgestanden. | ..., weil ich zu spät aufgestanden bin. |
| Der Zug kommt um neun an. | ..., dass der Zug um neun ankommt. |
Note the last line: a separable verb joins back together at the end of a subordinate clause.
Subordinate clause first
The whole subordinate clause can stand in position 1. Then the main clause verb comes immediately after the comma, in front of its subject.
- Wenn das Wetter gut ist, gehen wir spazieren. — If the weather is good, we go for a walk.
- Weil ich kein Auto habe, fahre ich mit dem Bus. — Because I have no car, I take the bus.
Two verbs meet around the comma. That pattern is a good check that you got it right.
Watch out as an English speaker
- After "because" English keeps normal order. German does not: ✗ ..., weil ich bin müde. / ✓ ..., weil ich müde bin.
- English drops "that". German may drop dass too, but then the word order stays verb-second: Ich glaube, er kommt später. What you cannot do is keep dass and normal order: ✗ Ich glaube, dass er kommt später. / ✓ Ich glaube, dass er später kommt.
- English "if" is two words in German: wenn for a condition, ob for an open question: ✗ Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt. / ✓ Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.
- English often has no comma before "because". In German the comma is not optional: ✗ Ich bleibe zu Hause weil ich krank bin. / ✓ Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
