Adjective endings (Adjektivendungen)

Free German grammar lesson · A2

Only in front of a noun

An adjective takes an ending only when it stands before a noun. After sein, werden and bleiben it stays bare.

  • Das Auto ist neu. — The car is new.
  • Ich habe ein neues Auto. — I have a new car.

Which ending you need depends on gender, case, and on what stands in front of the adjective.

After der, die, das (weak endings)

Also after dieser, jeder, welcher, alle. The article already shows gender and case, so the adjective only needs -e or -en.

Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative der neu*e Wagen* die neu*e Lampe* das neu*e Auto* die neu*en Autos*
Accusative den neu*en Wagen* die neu*e Lampe* das neu*e Auto* die neu*en Autos*
Dative dem neu*en Wagen* der neu*en Lampe* dem neu*en Auto* den neu*en Autos*

Five -e forms in the top left corner, -en everywhere else.

After ein, kein, mein (mixed endings)

ein shows nothing in three boxes (masculine nominative, neuter nominative and accusative). There the adjective takes over the der-word ending -er or -es. The rest is the same as above.

Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative ein neu*er Wagen* eine neu*e Lampe* ein neu*es Auto* keine neu*en Autos*
Accusative einen neu*en Wagen* eine neu*e Lampe* ein neu*es Auto* keine neu*en Autos*
Dative einem neu*en Wagen* einer neu*en Lampe* einem neu*en Auto* keinen neu*en Autos*

With no article at all (strong endings)

Common with drinks, food and uncountable things. Now the adjective alone must show the case, so it copies the der-word ending.

Case Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative gut*er Wein* frisch*e Milch* kalt*es Wasser* kalt*e Getränke*
Accusative gut*en Wein* frisch*e Milch* kalt*es Wasser* kalt*e Getränke*
Dative gut*em Wein* frisch*er Milch* kalt*em Wasser* kalt*en Getränken*
  • Ich trinke gern kaltes Wasser. — I like drinking cold water.

Three adjectives that change their stem

teuer loses the second e: ein teures Auto. hoch becomes hoh-: ein hohes Haus. dunkel loses its e: ein dunkles Zimmer.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • English adjectives never change, so the ending is easy to forget: ✗ ein neu Auto / ✓ ein neues Auto.
  • Do not add an ending after sein: ✗ Das Zimmer ist kleines. / ✓ Das Zimmer ist klein.
  • Plural after mein, dein, kein is always -en: ✗ meine neue Schuhe / ✓ meine neuen Schuhe.
  • If two adjectives stand together, both take the ending: ✗ ein kleines, rot Auto / ✓ ein kleines, rotes Auto.
