The present tense is the normal future
For plans and appointments, German uses the present tense plus a time expression. This is what people actually say.
- Morgen fahre ich nach Köln. — Tomorrow I'm going to Cologne.
- Nächste Woche fängt der Kurs an. — The course starts next week.
- Im August ziehen wir um. — We're moving house in August.
The time word carries the future meaning: morgen, übermorgen, nächste Woche, in zwei Tagen, bald, später, am Montag.
werden + infinitive
The real future tense is werden in position 2 and the infinitive at the end of the clause.

When Germans really use Futur I

The last line has no future meaning at all: it says he is probably home right now.
werden on its own means "become"
Without a second verb, werden is a full verb: Ich werde Krankenpflegerin. (I'm going to be a nurse.) Es wird kalt. (It's getting cold.)
Watch out as an English speaker
- ich will is not "I will". wollen means "want": ✗ Ich will dich morgen anrufen. (this says: I want to call you) / ✓ Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.
- "Going to" for a prediction is not gehen: ✗ Es geht morgen regnen. / ✓ Es wird morgen regnen.
- English keeps "will" next to the verb. In German the infinitive goes to the end: ✗ Ich werde anrufen dich morgen. / ✓ Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.

Was machst du nächsten Sommer? — What are you doing next summer?
Ich fange im Juni eine neue Stelle an. — I'm starting a new job in June.
Und der Umzug? — And the move?
Wir werden wohl im Mai umziehen, aber sicher ist das noch nicht. — We'll probably move in May, but it's not settled yet.
Du wirst das schon schaffen. — You'll manage.
