Two irregular key verbs
sein (to be) and haben (to have) are the most frequent verbs in German. They are irregular, so learn the forms by heart. Later they also build the perfect tense (ich habe gegessen, ich bin gefahren).
Present tense forms
| Person | sein | haben |
|---|---|---|
| ich | bin | habe |
| du | bist | hast |
| er / sie / es | ist | hat |
| wir | sind | haben |
| ihr | seid | habt |
| sie / Sie | sind | haben |
Note the spelling: ihr seid (you are) is different from seit (since). haben loses the b in du hast and er hat.
Uses of sein
- Name and origin: Ich bin Tom. Ich bin aus Irland. — I'm Tom. I'm from Ireland.
- Job and nationality, without article: Sie ist Ärztin. — She is a doctor.
- Description: Die Wohnung ist hell. — The flat is bright.
- Location: Wir sind im Supermarkt. — We are at the supermarket.
- Age: Mein Sohn ist sechs Jahre alt. — My son is six years old.
Uses of haben
- Possession and family: Ich habe zwei Kinder. — I have two children.
- Appointments and time: Hast du morgen Zeit? — Are you free tomorrow?
- Physical states that English expresses with "be":
| German (haben + noun) | English |
|---|---|
| Ich habe Hunger. | I am hungry. |
| Ich habe Durst. | I am thirsty. |
| Er hat Angst. | He is afraid. |
| Wir haben recht. | We are right. |
| Sie hat Kopfschmerzen. | She has a headache. |
| Ich habe keine Lust. | I don't feel like it. |
With sein instead: Mir ist kalt. (I am cold) and Ich bin müde. (I am tired).
Questions
The verb moves to the front: Bist du müde? — Are you tired? Haben Sie ein Zimmer frei? — Do you have a room available? German has no helper like "do": the verb haben itself comes first.
Watch out as an English speaker
- Age needs alt or nothing, never "years" alone: ✗ Ich bin 30 Jahre. / ✓ Ich bin 30 Jahre alt. or Ich bin 30.
- Hunger, thirst and fear normally use haben with a noun. Translating "I am" word for word gives a wrong sentence: ✗ Ich bin Durst. / ✓ Ich habe Durst. (Ich bin hungrig exists but sounds stiff.)
- "I am cold" is not Ich bin kalt (that describes your personality). ✓ Mir ist kalt.
- No "do" in questions with haben: ✗ Tust du ein Auto haben? / ✓ Hast du ein Auto?
Example dialogue
Hallo! Bist du neu hier? — Hi! Are you new here?

Hast du Hunger? Wir haben Pizza. — Are you hungry? We have pizza.
Danke, aber ich habe keinen Hunger. Ich habe nur Durst. — Thanks, but I'm not hungry. I'm just thirsty.
