Present tense: stem-vowel changes

Free German grammar lesson · A1

Same endings, different vowel

Some common verbs change the vowel of their stem, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The endings are the regular ones. ich, wir, ihr and sie/Sie keep the vowel of the infinitive.

The three patterns

Person e → i: sprechen e → ie: lesen a → ä: fahren
ich spreche lese fahre
du sprichst liest fährst
er / sie / es spricht liest fährt
wir sprechen lesen fahren
ihr sprecht lest fahrt
sie / Sie sprechen lesen fahren

Because lesen has a stem ending in -s, du liest and er liest are the same.

Common verbs by group

Pattern Verbs er / sie / es form
e → i essen, geben, helfen, nehmen, sprechen, treffen, vergessen isst, gibt, hilft, nimmt, spricht, trifft, vergisst
e → ie lesen, sehen, empfehlen liest, sieht, empfiehlt
a → ä fahren, schlafen, tragen, waschen, fallen fährt, schläft, trägt, wäscht, fällt
au → äu laufen läuft

Watch the consonants in two of them: nehmendu nimmst, er nimmt; essendu isst, er isst.

  • Mein Mann isst kein Fleisch. — My husband doesn't eat meat.
  • Nimmst du den Bus oder die U-Bahn? — Are you taking the bus or the underground?
  • Das Baby schläft schon. — The baby is already asleep.
  • Sie spricht drei Sprachen. — She speaks three languages.

wissen and werden

These two are irregular in a different way:

Person wissen (know a fact) werden (become)
ich weiß werde
du weißt wirst
er / sie / es weiß wird
wir wissen werden
ihr wisst werdet
sie / Sie wissen werden

ich weiß and er weiß have no ending. werden means "become": Es wird kalt. — It is getting cold.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • The change does not spread to ich or ihr: ✗ Ich spriche Englisch. / ✓ Ich spreche Englisch. and ✗ Ihr fährt zu schnell. / ✓ Ihr fahrt zu schnell.
  • English "knows" is regular, so learners add -t: ✗ Er weißt es nicht. / ✓ Er weiß es nicht.
  • "Know" splits in two: wissen for facts, kennen for people, places and things you are familiar with: ✗ Ich weiß deinen Bruder. / ✓ Ich kenne deinen Bruder.
  • werden is "become", not "will" in this sense: Er wird Arzt. means "He is going to be a doctor / is training to become a doctor".

Example dialogue
