Two words for "not"
German negates with kein or nicht. The choice depends on what you negate.
- kein negates a noun that would have ein or no article: ein Auto → kein Auto, Zeit → keine Zeit.
- nicht negates everything else: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, names, and nouns with der/die/das or mein/dein.
kein takes the endings of ein

ein has no plural, but kein does: Ich habe keine Kinder. — I have no children.
- Das ist kein Problem. — That is not a problem.
- Ich habe keinen Führerschein. — I don't have a driving licence.
- Wir haben keine Milch mehr. — We have no milk left.
Where nicht goes

A rough guide: nicht goes after the verb, objects and time words, but before adjectives, places, and the verb part at the end.
Answering negative questions: doch
To contradict a negative question or statement, answer doch, not ja:
- Hast du keinen Hunger? Doch, ich habe Hunger. — Aren't you hungry? Yes, I am.
- Kommst du nicht mit? Doch, ich komme mit. — Aren't you coming? Yes, I am.
- Kommst du nicht mit? Nein, ich komme nicht mit. — Aren't you coming? No, I'm not.
Watch out as an English speaker
- "Not a" and "no" with a noun are kein, not nicht ein: ✗ Ich habe nicht ein Auto. / ✓ Ich habe kein Auto.
- There is no "don't": the verb stays in second position and nicht comes later: ✗ Ich nicht verstehe. / ✓ Ich verstehe nicht.
- A negative question answered with ja sounds confused. Use doch: ✗ Bist du nicht müde? Ja, ich bin müde. / ✓ Bist du nicht müde? Doch, ich bin müde.
- Do not double negatives with kein: ✗ Ich habe nicht keine Zeit. / ✓ Ich habe keine Zeit.
Example dialogue
Kommst du heute Abend nicht zur Party? — Aren't you coming to the party tonight?
Doch, aber ich habe kein Geschenk. — Yes, I am, but I don't have a present.
Das ist kein Problem. Anna kennt dich nicht, sie erwartet nichts. — That's no problem. Anna doesn't know you, she isn't expecting anything.
Gut. Ich bleibe aber nicht lange. — Good. But I won't stay long.
