Stem + ending
Take the infinitive, remove -en (or -n) to get the stem, then add an ending for each person: wohnen → wohn- → ich wohne.
| Person | Ending | wohnen (live) | lernen (learn) | spielen (play) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | wohne | lerne | spiele |
| du | -st | wohnst | lernst | spielst |
| er / sie / es | -t | wohnt | lernt | spielt |
| wir | -en | wohnen | lernen | spielen |
| ihr | -t | wohnt | lernt | spielt |
| sie / Sie | -en | wohnen | lernen | spielen |
The wir, sie and Sie forms look like the infinitive. The er and ihr forms are identical.
Stems ending in -d or -t: add an extra e
German cannot pronounce arbeitst or findt clearly, so an -e- is inserted before -st and -t. The same happens after some consonant + m/n clusters (öffnen, rechnen, atmen).
| Person | arbeiten (work) | finden (find) | öffnen (open) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | arbeite | finde | öffne |
| du | arbeitest | findest | öffnest |
| er / sie / es | arbeitet | findet | öffnet |
| ihr | arbeitet | findet | öffnet |
Stems ending in -s, -ß, -z, -x: du gets only -t
The s of -st merges with the stem, so du and er look the same:
- heißen: du heißt, er heißt — you are called, he is called
- tanzen: du tanzt, sie tanzt — you dance, she dances
- reisen: du reist, er reist — you travel, he travels
What the present tense covers
One German form translates several English ones:
- Ich koche. — I cook. / I am cooking. / I do cook.
- Wir wohnen seit drei Jahren in Hamburg. — We have been living in Hamburg for three years.
- Morgen besuche ich meine Oma. — Tomorrow I'm visiting my grandma.
Watch out as an English speaker
- German has no continuous form. Do not build one with sein: ✗ Ich bin lernen. / ✓ Ich lerne gerade. (gerade = right now, if you need to stress it)
- Something that started in the past and is still true uses the present with seit, not a perfect tense: ✗ Ich habe hier seit 2020 gewohnt. / ✓ Ich wohne seit 2020 hier.
- Questions and negatives need no "do": ✗ Tust du hier wohnen? / ✓ Wohnst du hier?
- The du ending -st is easy to forget because English only marks "he/she": ✗ Du lernt Deutsch. / ✓ Du lernst Deutsch.
