Noun gender and articles (der, die, das, ein, eine)

Free German grammar lesson · A1

Three genders

Every German noun has a grammatical gender: masculine, feminine or neuter. The gender belongs to the word, not to the thing: der Löffel (spoon) is masculine, die Gabel (fork) feminine, das Messer (knife) neuter. The article shows the gender, so learn every noun together with its article: not Tisch, but der Tisch.

All nouns are written with a capital letter: der Tisch, die Straße, das Haus.

The articles in the nominative

Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Definite (the) der Mann die Frau das Kind die Kinder
Indefinite (a/an) ein Mann eine Frau ein Kind no article: Kinder

Masculine and neuter share ein. In the plural every noun takes die, whatever its gender.

  • Der Bus kommt. — The bus is coming.
  • Das ist eine Wohnung in Köln. — That is a flat in Cologne.
  • Das Zimmer ist klein. — The room is small.
  • Die Kinder spielen. — The children are playing.

Patterns that help

Gender is often unpredictable, but some endings are reliable:

Ending or group Gender Examples
-ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät feminine die Wohnung, die Freiheit, die Möglichkeit, die Information
-chen, -lein (small forms) neuter das Mädchen, das Brötchen, das Fräulein
-ment, -um mostly neuter das Dokument, das Zentrum
male people, days, months, seasons masculine der Vater, der Montag, der Mai, der Winter
-er for people who do a job masculine der Lehrer, der Fahrer
female form -in feminine die Lehrerin, die Ärztin
infinitives used as nouns neuter das Essen, das Schwimmen

In compound nouns, the last part decides the gender: das Haus + die Tür = die Haustür.

Natural and grammatical gender

For most people the article matches the sex: der Mann, die Frau. The exception is small forms: das Mädchen (the girl) is neuter because of -chen. Grammatical gender also controls the pronoun: Der Tisch ist groß. Er ist neu.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • English has one "the", so learners drop the article when noting vocabulary and then guess later. Always note die Tür, never just Tür.
  • Do not assume things are neuter. Most objects are der or die: ✗ Das Tisch ist neu. / ✓ Der Tisch ist neu.
  • Nouns need a capital letter inside the sentence, too: ✗ Hier liegt ein stift. / ✓ Hier liegt ein Stift.
  • A job or nationality after sein takes no article: ✗ Ich bin ein Lehrer. / ✓ Ich bin Lehrer.

Example dialogue

Was ist das? — What is that?
Das ist eine Lampe. Die Lampe ist neu. — That is a lamp. The lamp is new.
Und das? Ist das ein Stuhl? — And that? Is that a chair?
Ja, das ist ein Stuhl. Der Stuhl ist sehr bequem. — Yes, that is a chair. The chair is very comfortable.
