Possessive articles (Possessivartikel)

Free German grammar lesson · A1

Two decisions

A possessive article (mein, dein, ...) answers two questions:

  1. Who owns it? This chooses the word: mein (my), sein (his), ihr (her).
  2. What is owned, and what is its role? This chooses the ending, exactly like ein and kein.
  • Das ist mein Bruder. — That is my brother. (der Bruder)
  • Das ist meine Schwester. — That is my sister. (die Schwester)

The stems

Owner Possessive English
ich mein my
du dein your (informal)
er / es sein his / its
sie (she) ihr her / its
wir unser our
ihr euer your (informal plural)
sie (they) ihr their
Sie Ihr your (formal)

ihr means "her" or "their"; Ihr with a capital means formal "your".

Endings: the same as ein and kein

Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative mein Vater meine Mutter mein Kind meine Eltern
Accusative meinen Vater meine Mutter mein Kind meine Eltern

Every possessive follows this table: unser Sohn, unsere Tochter, unseren Sohn.

euer loses its second e when an ending is added: euer Haus, but eure Wohnung, euren Garten.

Examples

  • Wo ist dein Schlüssel? — Where is your key?
  • Ich suche meine Brille. — I'm looking for my glasses.
  • Er ruft seinen Chef an. — He is calling his boss.
  • Sie besucht ihren Vater. — She is visiting her father.
  • Die Kinder spielen mit ihrem Hund. — The children are playing with their dog. (dative, see a later lesson)
  • Wie ist Ihr Name, bitte? — What is your name, please?

Watch out as an English speaker

  • The ending agrees with the thing owned, not the owner. A man's mother is still feminine: ✗ Er besucht sein Mutter. / ✓ Er besucht seine Mutter.
  • "Its" depends on the gender of the owner noun. For a feminine noun use ihr: ✗ Die Firma und sein Chef / ✓ Die Firma und ihr Chef (the company and its boss).
  • The masculine accusative needs -en, just like einen: ✗ Ich liebe mein Mann. / ✓ Ich liebe meinen Mann.
  • English "your" never changes, so learners forget the ending on euer: ✗ euer Kinder / ✓ eure Kinder.
