Numbers

Number German Number German
1 eins 13 dreizehn
2 zwei 16 sechzehn
3 drei 17 siebzehn
6 sechs 20 zwanzig
7 sieben 30 dreißig
10 zehn 60 sechzig
11 elf 70 siebzig
12 zwölf 100 hundert

From 21 to 99 the ones come first, joined with und, all in one word:

  • 21 einundzwanzig (one-and-twenty)
  • 47 siebenundvierzig
  • 99 neunundneunzig
  • 358 dreihundertachtundfünfzig
  • 2026 zweitausendsechsundzwanzig

Years before 2000 are said in hundreds: 1995 neunzehnhundertfünfundneunzig. In written numbers German uses a comma for decimals and a dot for thousands: 2,5 (zwei Komma fünf), 1.000.

Telling time: everyday speech

The question is Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? "At" a time is um: um acht Uhr.

Time Everyday German
8:00 acht (Uhr)
8:05 fünf nach acht
8:15 Viertel nach acht
8:30 halb neun
8:45 Viertel vor neun
8:50 zehn vor neun

halb + next hour means "half an hour before that hour": halb neun = 8:30.

Official 24-hour time

Timetables, appointments, the radio and offices use the 24-hour clock, read as hours + Uhr + minutes:

  • 20:15zwanzig Uhr fünfzehn
  • 7:30sieben Uhr dreißig
  • Der Zug fährt um 18:42 Uhr. — The train leaves at 6:42 pm.

Days, months, dates

Time word Preposition Example
day, part of the day am am Montag, am Wochenende, am Abend
month, season im im Mai, im Sommer
clock time um um halb sieben
year no preposition 2020 bin ich umgezogen.

Dates use ordinals with a dot: der 3. Mai is read der dritte Mai; am 3. Mai is am dritten Mai.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • halb looks forward, not back: ✗ halb sieben = 7:30 / ✓ halb sieben = 6:30.
  • Two-digit numbers are spoken ones first, which causes errors in dictation and phone numbers: vierundsechzig is 64, not 46.
  • "In May" and "on Monday" are not in Mai and an Montag: ✗ Ich habe in Mai Urlaub. / ✓ Ich habe im Mai Urlaub.
  • Do not put in before a year: ✗ Ich bin in 2019 gekommen. / ✓ Ich bin 2019 gekommen. (or im Jahr 2019)

Example dialogue

Wann ist dein Termin beim Arzt? — When is your doctor's appointment?
Am Donnerstag, dem 12. März, um Viertel nach zehn. — On Thursday, the 12th of March, at quarter past ten.
Und wie spät ist es jetzt? — And what time is it now?
Es ist halb zehn. Ich muss los! — It's half past nine. I have to go!
