Three forms for "you"
English has one imperative ("Come!"). German has three, because it has three ways to say "you": du, ihr and Sie. The verb comes first.
| Form | How to build it | kommen | warten | nehmen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| du | du-form without -st and without du | Komm! | Warte! | Nimm! |
| ihr | ihr-form without ihr | Kommt! | Wartet! | Nehmt! |
| Sie | infinitive + Sie | Kommen Sie! | Warten Sie! | Nehmen Sie! |
The du-form in detail
- Regular verbs: du machst → Mach!, du gehst → Geh!
- Stems in -d, -t and some others keep -e: Warte!, Arbeite!, Öffne!
- e → i / ie verbs keep the change: du nimmst → Nimm!, du gibst → Gib!, du liest → Lies!, du isst → Iss!, du sprichst → Sprich!
- a → ä verbs lose the umlaut: du fährst → Fahr!, du schläfst → Schlaf!
In careful writing you sometimes see Komme! or Gehe!; in normal speech the short form is standard.
sein and haben
| du | ihr | Sie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| sein | Sei ruhig! | Seid ruhig! | Seien Sie ruhig! |
| haben | Hab keine Angst! | Habt keine Angst! | Haben Sie keine Angst! |
Separable verbs, bitte and softeners
The prefix goes to the end, as in any main clause:
- Ruf mich morgen an! — Call me tomorrow.
- Machen Sie bitte die Tür zu. — Please close the door.
bitte can stand after the verb, at the start or at the end. The small words mal and doch make an order sound friendlier:
- Komm doch mal vorbei! — Why don't you drop by?
- Hilf mir bitte mal. — Give me a hand, please.
For "let's", use the wir-form with verb first: Gehen wir! — Let's go!
Negative imperative
nicht or kein follows the normal rules: Vergiss den Schlüssel nicht! — Don't forget the key. Mach dir keine Sorgen! — Don't worry.
Watch out as an English speaker
- The Sie-form needs Sie after the verb. The bare infinitive sounds like an order on a sign or to a dog: ✗ Warten, bitte! (to a customer) / ✓ Warten Sie bitte!
- Do not keep the pronoun in the du- or ihr-form: ✗ Du komm her! / ✓ Komm her!
- a → ä verbs drop the umlaut, but e → i verbs keep the change: ✗ Fähr langsam! / ✓ Fahr langsam! and ✗ Nehm den Bus! / ✓ Nimm den Bus!
- "Don't" has no German equivalent here: ✗ Tu nicht rauchen! / ✓ Rauch nicht!
