The indirect object

With verbs like geben, schenken, zeigen, schicken or erklären, there is often a person who receives something. That person is the indirect object, and it is in the dative. The thing given is in the accusative. Ask Wem? (to whom) for the dative.

  • Ich gebe dem Kind einen Apfel. — I give the child an apple.
  • Wir schenken unserer Mutter Blumen. — We are giving our mother flowers.
  • Kannst du mir den Weg zeigen? — Can you show me the way?

Articles in the dative

Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative der / ein die / eine das / ein die / –
Accusative den / einen die / eine das / ein die / –
Dative dem / einem der / einer dem / einem den / – + noun -n

kein and the possessives take the same endings: keinem, meiner, seinem, unseren Kindern.

In the plural the noun itself adds -n, unless it already ends in -n or takes -s: die Kinderden Kindern, die Freundeden Freunden, but den Frauen, den Autos.

Dative pronouns

Nominative ich du er sie es wir ihr sie Sie
Accusative mich dich ihn sie es uns euch sie Sie
Dative mir dir ihm ihr ihm uns euch ihnen Ihnen

Verbs that take only a dative object

Some verbs have a dative object where English has a direct object:

Verb Example
helfen Kannst du mir helfen? — Can you help me?
danken Ich danke Ihnen. — Thank you.
gehören Das Fahrrad gehört meinem Bruder. — The bike belongs to my brother.
gefallen Die Wohnung gefällt uns. — We like the flat.
schmecken Schmeckt dir die Suppe? — Do you like the soup?
passen Der Termin passt mir gut. — The appointment suits me.

Many everyday phrases use a dative: Wie geht es Ihnen? — How are you? Mir ist kalt. — I'm cold.

Order of two objects

  • Two nouns: dative before accusative. Ich gebe dem Mann den Schlüssel.
  • Accusative pronoun: it comes first. Ich gebe ihn dem Mann. / Ich gebe ihn ihm.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • helfen takes the dative, although "help him" looks like a direct object: ✗ Ich helfe dich. / ✓ Ich helfe dir.
  • With gefallen the thing you like is the subject and you are the dative: ✗ Ich gefalle das Kleid. / ✓ Das Kleid gefällt mir.
  • Do not translate "to" before the receiver: ✗ Ich gebe das Geld zu meiner Schwester. / ✓ Ich gebe meiner Schwester das Geld.
  • The plural dative needs the extra -n, which has no English equivalent: ✗ Ich helfe den Kinder. / ✓ Ich helfe den Kindern.

Example dialogue

Wem gehört die Jacke hier? — Whose jacket is this?
Die gehört meiner Kollegin. — It belongs to my colleague.
Gefällt sie dir? — Do you like it?
Ja, sehr. Ich schenke meinem Freund so eine Jacke zum Geburtstag. — Yes, a lot. I'm giving my boyfriend a jacket like that for his birthday.
