Tiempo
| Preposición | Uso | Ejemplos |
|---|---|---|
| in | meses, años, estaciones, partes del día | in July, in 2020, in winter, in the morning |
| on | días y fechas | on Monday, on May 5th, on Friday evening |
| at | horas y momentos concretos | at 8 o'clock, at noon, at night, at Christmas |
- in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, pero at night.
- Si se nombra el día, manda el día: on Monday morning.
- No se usa preposición delante de next, last, this, every, tomorrow, yesterday: See you next week. (Nos vemos la semana que viene.)
Lugar
| Preposición | Uso | Ejemplos |
|---|---|---|
| in | dentro de un espacio, una ciudad o un país | in the kitchen, in the box, in Bogotá, in Peru |
| on | sobre una superficie, en un piso de un edificio | on the table, on the wall, on the second floor |
| at | un punto concreto o un lugar donde se hace algo | at the door, at the bus stop, at school, at work |
Combinaciones que conviene memorizar:
- at home (en casa), at work (en el trabajo), at school (en el colegio)
- on the bus, on the train, on the plane, pero in the car, in a taxi
- in the picture (en la foto)
- arrive in con ciudades y países, arrive at con edificios y lugares concretos
Ejemplos con arrive:
- We arrived in Lima at midnight. — Llegamos a Lima a medianoche.
- She arrived at the airport early. — Llegó temprano al aeropuerto.
Ojo si hablas español
- "En la mesa", "en la pared". Si es una superficie, on: ✗ The keys are in the table. / ✓ The keys are on the table.
- Días y "por la noche". "El lunes" no lleva preposición en español, pero en inglés sí: ✗ I have a class the Monday. / ✓ I have a class on Monday. Y para "por la noche" en general: ✗ I work in the night. / ✓ I work at night.
- "Llegar a". ✗ We arrived to Madrid. / ✓ We arrived in Madrid.
- Falso amigo: library. Library es "biblioteca"; una "librería" es bookstore (o bookshop): ✗ I bought a novel at the library. / ✓ I bought a novel at the bookstore.
