What changes
In many common verbs the stressed vowel of the stem changes in the present tense. The endings stay regular.

The "boot" pattern
The change happens in four persons: yo, tú, él/ella/usted, ellos/ellas/ustedes. Nosotros and vosotros keep the original vowel, because the stress falls on the ending. If you shade the changed forms in the table, they form the shape of a boot.

The infinitive does not show the change, so learn these verbs with their yo form: pensar (pienso), volver (vuelvo).
In sentences
- ¿Puedes abrir la ventana? — Can you open the window?
- La clase empieza a las nueve. — The class starts at nine.
- ¿Cuánto cuesta este bolso? — How much does this bag cost?
- Quiero un café, por favor. — I'd like a coffee, please.
- Los niños duermen ocho horas. — The children sleep eight hours.
- Pienso que tienes razón. — I think you're right.
- Nosotros volvemos mañana. — We're coming back tomorrow. (no change)
Watch out as an English speaker
- Changing nosotros too. Once learners know quiero, they extend it. ✗ Nosotros quieremos. / ✓ Nosotros queremos. ✗ Puedemos ir. / ✓ Podemos ir.
- Pedir vs preguntar. Both are "to ask". Pedir is to ask for something; preguntar is to ask a question. ✗ Pregunto un café. / ✓ Pido un café. ✗ Pido dónde está el baño. / ✓ Pregunto dónde está el baño.
- Jugar vs tocar. "Play" a game or sport is jugar; "play" an instrument is tocar. ✗ Juego la guitarra. / ✓ Toco la guitarra. Sports take a in Spain: Juego al fútbol. (Many Latin Americans say juego fútbol.)
- Querer + person means "love". Te quiero is "I love you". To say you want something, use a thing: Quiero agua.

¿Qué quieres tomar? — What would you like to drink?
Prefiero un té. ¿Puedes pedir tú? — I'd rather have tea. Can you order?
Claro. ¿A qué hora empieza la película? — Sure. What time does the film start?
A las ocho, pero volvemos pronto, ¿vale? — At eight, but we'll come back early, OK?
