Yes/no questions

Written Spanish opens a question with ¿ and closes it with ?. The same goes for exclamations: ¡Qué bien!

A yes/no question can have the same word order as a statement. In speech, rising intonation marks the question. The subject can also move after the verb.

  • Tienes hermanos.¿Tienes hermanos? — Do you have brothers and sisters?
  • ¿Marta vive aquí? / ¿Vive Marta aquí? — Does Marta live here?

The opening ¿ goes where the question actually starts, which is not always the start of the sentence: *Y tú, **¿*de dónde eres?

Question words

All question words carry a written accent.

¿quién? / ¿quiénes? who? ¿Quién es? / ¿Quiénes son?
¿dónde? where? ¿Dónde vives?
¿adónde? where to? ¿Adónde vas?
¿de dónde? where from? ¿De dónde eres?
¿cuándo? when? ¿Cuándo llegas?
¿cómo? how? ¿Cómo te llamas?
¿cuánto/-a? ¿cuántos/-as? how much? how many? ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes?
¿por qué? why? ¿Por qué estudias español?
¿cuál? / ¿cuáles? which? what? ¿Cuál es tu número?

After a question word, the subject (if expressed) goes after the verb: ¿Dónde trabaja tu padre?

Por qué or porque?

question por qué (two words, accent) why
answer porque (one word, no accent) because
  • ¿Por qué no vienes? Porque estoy enfermo. — Why aren't you coming? Because I'm ill.

The accent also appears in indirect questions: No sé dónde vive. — I don't know where he lives. Without a question meaning there is no accent: La casa donde vivo.

Qué or cuál?

  • qué + noun: ¿Qué libro lees? — What/which book are you reading?
  • qué + ser asks for a definition: ¿Qué es un piso? — What is a piso?
  • cuál + ser asks for one item from a set, like a name, a number or a date: ¿Cuál es tu dirección? — What is your address?

Prepositions go first

A preposition belongs in front of the question word. It never comes at the end.

  • ¿Con quién vives? — Who do you live with?
  • ¿De qué hablas? — What are you talking about?
  • ¿Para qué es esto? — What is this for?

Watch out as an English speaker

  • Preposition at the end.¿Quién vives con? / ✓ ¿Con quién vives?¿Dónde eres de? / ✓ ¿De dónde eres?
  • "What is your name/address/phone number?" uses cuál.¿Qué es tu número de teléfono? / ✓ ¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono? (For names, say ¿Cómo te llamas?)
  • Accents and ¿.Donde vives? / ✓ ¿Dónde vives?¿Por que? / ✓ ¿Por qué?
  • Cuánto agrees.¿Cuánto personas? / ✓ ¿Cuántas personas?

Example dialogue

¿Cómo te llamas? — What's your name?
Me llamo Omar. Y tú, ¿de dónde eres? — My name is Omar. And where are you from?
Soy de Perú. ¿Por qué estudias español? — I'm from Peru. Why are you studying Spanish?
Porque trabajo con clientes de México. ¿Con quién vives aquí? — Because I work with clients from Mexico. Who do you live with here?
