da- and wo-compounds (Präpositionaladverbien)

Free German grammar lesson · B2

Things get da-, people get a pronoun

After a verb with a fixed preposition you cannot say auf es or über sie about an object. German fuses da- to the preposition instead. For people, the preposition keeps a normal personal pronoun.

Verb About a thing About a person
warten auf Ich warte darauf. Ich warte auf ihn.
sprechen über Wir sprechen darüber. Wir sprechen über sie.
sich kümmern um Ich kümmere mich darum. Ich kümmere mich um ihn.
Angst haben vor Ich habe davor Angst. Ich habe vor ihm Angst.

dar- before a vowel

da + consonant dar + vowel
damit, dafür, davon, danach, dazu darauf, daran, darüber, darum, darin, darunter

The r is there only to make the word pronounceable, so daauf and daan do not exist.

Questions: wo(r)- or preposition + wen/wem

Asking about a thing Asking about a person
Worauf wartest du? Auf wen wartest du?
Woran denkst du? An wen denkst du?
Worüber ärgerst du dich? Über wen ärgerst du dich?
Womit schreibst du? Mit wem sprichst du?

The case of wen or wem comes from the preposition, exactly as in the statement.

da- pointing forward to a clause

When the "thing" is a whole idea, the da-word stands in the main clause and announces a dass-clause or a zu-infinitive that follows.

  • Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen. — I'm looking forward to seeing you.
  • Wir warten darauf, dass der Bus kommt. — We're waiting for the bus to come.
  • Er hat mich darum gebeten, früher zu kommen. — He asked me to come earlier.
  • Ich denke oft daran, wie es früher war. — I often think about how it used to be.

With most of these verbs the da-word is required: ✗ Wir warten, dass der Bus kommt. sounds unfinished. With a few, such as bitten, it can be left out.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • English leaves the preposition at the end of the question. German welds it to the front: ✗ Was wartest du auf? / ✓ Worauf wartest du?
  • A thing after a preposition does not normally become es or ihn: ✗ Ich warte auf es. / ✓ Ich warte darauf.
  • A person, though, does keep the pronoun: ✗ Mein Bruder kommt gleich, ich warte darauf. / ✓ ... ich warte auf ihn.
  • Do not drop the linking r: ✗ daauf, daan, daüber / ✓ darauf, daran, darüber.
  • damit has two jobs: the da-word ("with it") and the conjunction "so that". The word order tells you which one you are reading.

Example dialogue

Worüber habt ihr so lange gesprochen? — What did you talk about for so long?
Über die neue Wohnung. Ich freue mich schon darauf. — About the new flat. I'm looking forward to it already.
Und der Vermieter? Hast du mit ihm geredet? — And the landlord? Did you speak to him?
Noch nicht. Ich warte darauf, dass er den Vertrag schickt. — Not yet. I'm waiting for him to send the contract.
