Conjugation of zijn (to be)

Zijn is the most important verb in Dutch. It is irregular, so you must memorize each form:

Pronoun Form Example Translation
ik ben Ik ben student. I am a student.
jij/je bent Jij bent aardig. You are nice.
u bent / is U bent welkom. You are welcome.
hij/zij/het is Hij is mijn broer. He is my brother.
wij/we zijn Wij zijn blij. We are happy.
jullie zijn Jullie zijn laat. You (all) are late.
zij/ze zijn Zij zijn thuis. They are at home.

Inversion with jij

When jij/je comes after the verb (in questions or inverted sentences), the -t drops:
