How to conjugate regular verbs

Dutch regular verbs follow a simple pattern. Start from the stem (stam), then add endings:

Step 1: Find the stem

Take the infinitive and remove -en:

Infinitive Stem Meaning
werken werk to work
wonen woon to live
leren leer to learn
fietsen fiets to cycle
praten praat to talk

Step 2: Add the endings

Pronoun Ending werken wonen
ik stem ik werk ik woon
jij/je stem + t jij werkt jij woont
u stem + t u werkt u woont
hij/zij/het stem + t hij werkt zij woont
wij/we infinitive wij werken wij wonen
jullie infinitive jullie werken jullie wonen
zij/ze (they) infinitive zij werken zij wonen

The jij inversion rule

When jij/je comes after the verb, the -t disappears:

Spelling rules

Long vowels double

A long vowel in an open syllable is written single (le-ren); in the closed stem it is written double: leren → ik leer (not ler).

Double consonants simplify

If the infinitive has a double consonant: rennen → ik ren (not renn).

Stem ending in -t

Do not add a second t: praten → hij praat (not praatt).
