Two ways to say "not" in Dutch
Dutch has two negation words: niet and geen. Choosing the right one depends on what you are negating.
Geen — negating nouns with een or no article
Use geen when the positive sentence has een (a/an) or no article. Geen replaces the article:

Niet — negating everything else
Use niet to negate verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, or nouns with de/het:
Negating adjectives and adverbs
- Het is niet mooi. — It is not beautiful.
- Hij loopt niet snel. — He doesn't walk fast.
Negating a location / prepositional phrase
- Zij is niet thuis. — She is not at home.
- De kat is niet in de tuin. — The cat is not in the garden.
Negating a definite noun (de/het)
- Ik heb niet de sleutel. — I don't have the key.
Where to place niet?
Generally, niet goes:
- At the end if there is nothing specific to negate: Ik werk niet. — I don't work.
- Before what you want to negate: Ik ben niet moe. — I am not tired.
