What are modal verbs?

Modal verbs express ability, desire, obligation, or permission. In Dutch, the four main modals are:

kunnen can / to be able to ability
willen to want desire
moeten must / to have to obligation
mogen may / to be allowed permission

Conjugation

Pronoun kunnen willen moeten mogen
ik kan wil moet mag
jij/je kan / kunt wilt / wil moet mag
u kunt / kan wilt moet mag
hij/zij/het kan wil moet mag
wij/we kunnen willen moeten mogen
jullie kunnen willen moeten mogen
zij/ze kunnen willen moeten mogen

Word order with modals

The modal verb takes position 2, and the infinitive goes to the end:

Examples for each modal

Kunnen: ability / possibility

Willen: wanting / desire

Moeten: obligation / necessity

Mogen: permission
