Er is / Er zijn: there is / there are

The Dutch word er is used like English "there" to express that something exists or is present:

Dutch English
Er is een kat in de tuin. There is a cat in the garden.
Er zijn drie boeken op de tafel. There are three books on the table.
Er is geen melk meer. There is no more milk.
Er zijn veel studenten in de klas. There are many students in the class.

Er with numbers and quantities

Er often pairs with a number or quantity word. In answers, you can use er instead of repeating the noun:

Hoeveel broers heb je? — How many brothers do you have?
Ik heb er twee. — I have two (of them).

Zijn er appels? — Are there apples?
Ja, er zijn er vijf. — Yes, there are five (of them).
