Contables e incontables (some / any / much / many)

Lección gratuita de gramática inglesa · A2

Dos tipos de sustantivos

  • Contables: se pueden contar y tienen plural. En singular llevan a / an: a chair, two chairs; an apple, three apples.
  • Incontables: sustancias, materiales y conceptos abstractos. No tienen plural, no llevan a / an y el verbo va en singular: water, money, rice, time, music.

Por eso el verbo va en singular aunque en español uses el plural:

  • The news is good. — Las noticias son buenas.
  • The furniture is new. — Los muebles son nuevos.

Incontables en inglés que en español se cuentan

Inglés (incontable) Español Correcto Incorrecto
information información, informaciones some information informations
advice consejo, consejos some advice, a piece of advice an advice, advices
furniture mueble, muebles a lot of furniture furnitures
news noticia, noticias good news, a piece of news a news
homework tarea, tareas a lot of homework homeworks
luggage equipaje, maletas too much luggage luggages

some y any

Some va en frases afirmativas; any, en negativas y preguntas. Los dos sirven con plurales y con incontables:

  • I have some questions. — Tengo algunas preguntas.
  • There is some milk in the fridge. — Hay leche en el refrigerador.
  • We don't have any bread. — No tenemos pan.
  • Do you have any children? — ¿Tienes hijos?

En ofrecimientos y peticiones se usa some aunque sea una pregunta: Would you like some coffee? (¿Quieres café?)

much, many, a lot of, a few, a little

Palabra Se usa con Ejemplo
many contables en plural How many brothers do you have?
much incontables How much money do you need?
a lot of los dos a lot of friends, a lot of work
a few contables en plural a few eggs (unos pocos huevos)
a little incontables a little sugar (un poco de azúcar)

En frases afirmativas a lot of suena más natural que much: I have a lot of work today. (Hoy tengo mucho trabajo.) En negativas y preguntas, much y many son normales: I don't have much time. (No tengo mucho tiempo.)

Ojo si hablas español

  • Plural en palabras incontables. She gave me some good advices. / ✓ She gave me some good advice.I need more informations. / ✓ I need more information.
  • "Mucha gente". People es contable y plural: ✗ Much people speaks English here. / ✓ A lot of people speak English here.
