Das englische „es gibt“
Wenn du sagen willst, dass etwas existiert oder irgendwo vorhanden ist, benutzt du there is (Singular) oder there are (Plural). Im Deutschen entspricht das meist es gibt, oft aber auch da ist, es liegt, es steht.

Das Deutsche wechselt das Verb (liegt, steht, hängt), das Englische bleibt bei there is / there are.
Singular oder Plural
Es gibt bleibt im Deutschen immer gleich. Im Englischen richtet sich das Verb nach dem Nomen, das folgt:
- There is a bank near here. — Hier in der Nähe gibt es eine Bank.
- There are many parks in Berlin. — In Berlin gibt es viele Parks.
- There is a lot of traffic today. — Heute ist viel Verkehr. (unzählbar → is)
Bei einer Aufzählung zählt das erste Nomen: There is a sofa and two chairs. / There are two chairs and a sofa. Im Gespräch hörst du oft there's auch vor Plural, schriftlich schreibst du there are.
Verneinung und Frage
- There isn't any milk left. — Es ist keine Milch mehr da.
- There aren't any free seats. — Es gibt keine freien Plätze.
- Is there a supermarket near here? — Gibt es hier in der Nähe einen Supermarkt?
- Are there any questions? — Gibt es noch Fragen?
Kurzantworten: Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. / Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Vergangenheit und Zukunft

- There were a lot of tourists in the city. — In der Stadt waren viele Touristen.
there is oder it is?
Mit there is führst du etwas Neues ein. Mit it is beziehst du dich auf etwas Bekanntes:
- There is a book on the table. It is mine. — Auf dem Tisch liegt ein Buch. Es gehört mir.
Achtung für Deutschsprachige
- es gibt wörtlich: ✗ It gives a problem. / ✓ There is a problem. ✗ It gives many parks here. / ✓ There are many parks here.
- es ist statt there is: ✗ It is a man at the door. / ✓ There is a man at the door.
- Singular wie „es gibt“: ✗ There is many people here. / ✓ There are many people here.
- es liegt, es steht: ✗ It lies a book on the table. / ✓ There is a book on the table.
