Por vs para

Free Spanish grammar lesson · A2

One English word, two Spanish ones

English "for" splits into por and para. A rough rule of thumb: para looks forward to a goal, a destination or a person who receives something; por looks back at a cause, or points at the route, the exchange or the means.

  • Estudio para ser médico. — I study to become a doctor. (goal)
  • Estudio por mis padres. — I study because of my parents. (reason)

Para

Use Example

destination Salimos para Bilbao. — We're leaving for Bilbao.
deadline El informe es para el lunes. — The report is due on Monday.
opinion Para mí, es demasiado caro. — For me, it's too expensive.
employer Trabaja para una empresa alemana. — She works for a German company.

With a purpose, para is normally followed by an infinitive: una máquina para lavar, salgo para comprar pan. When the purpose has a different subject it becomes para que plus the subjunctive: Te llamo para que lo sepas. A noun can follow too: Estudio para el examen.
