The imperfect (pretérito imperfecto)

Free Spanish grammar lesson · A2

What the imperfect does

The imperfect (pretérito imperfecto) describes the past without saying when it ended: habits, repeated actions, descriptions and background. English renders it with "used to", "would", "was ...-ing" or a plain past.

  • De niño jugaba al fútbol todos los días. — As a child I used to play football every day.
  • La casa era vieja y tenía un jardín grande. — The house was old and had a big garden.

Endings

Person hablar comer vivir
yo hablaba comía vivía
hablabas comías vivías
él / ella / usted hablaba comía vivía
nosotros/-as hablábamos comíamos vivíamos
vosotros/-as (Spain) hablabais comíais vivíais
ellos / ellas / ustedes hablaban comían vivían

-er and -ir verbs share the -ía endings, and every one of those forms carries a written accent on the í. In -ar verbs only the nosotros form takes an accent: hablábamos.

The yo and él forms are identical, so a pronoun or a name is often needed: Yo trabajaba en Sevilla; ella trabajaba en Cádiz.

Only three irregular verbs

Person ser ir ver
yo era iba veía
eras ibas veías
él / ella / usted era iba veía
nosotros/-as éramos íbamos veíamos
vosotros/-as (Spain) erais ibais veíais
ellos / ellas / ustedes eran iban veían

Stem-changing verbs do not change in the imperfect: poder → podía, querer → quería, dormir → dormía, pensar → pensaba.

  • Age and clock time in the past take the imperfect.Fui diez años. / ✓ Tenía diez años.Fueron las tres. / ✓ Eran las tres.
  • "Was ...-ing" is usually just the imperfect. Estaba comiendo exists, but comía already says it. With ser and other states the progressive is wrong: ✗ Estaba siendo tarde. / ✓ Era tarde.
