Digits and the numbers 1-20
Persian text uses its own digits, written left to right inside the right-to-left line:

Tens, hundreds and compounds
سی (۳۰), چهل (۴۰), پنجاه (۵۰), شصت (۶۰), هفتاد (۷۰), هشتاد (۸۰), نود (۹۰), صد (۱۰۰), هزار (۱۰۰۰).
Parts are joined with و (o), always:
- بیست و یک (۲۱), چهل و پنج (۴۵), صد و ده (۱۱۰), هزار و نهصد و نود (۱۹۹۰).
The counted noun stays singular
After a number the noun has no plural ending. The counter تا is very common in speech but usually left out in formal writing; نفر counts people.
- سه کتاب / سه تا کتاب — three books.
- پنج نفر دانشجو — five students.
- چند کتاب داری؟ — How many books do you have?
Telling the time

Add صبح (morning), ظهر (noon), بعدازظهر (afternoon), عصر (late afternoon), شب (evening): ساعت ۸ صبح.
Ordinals
Add ـم after the number: دوم، سوم، چهارم، پنجم. Irregular: اول (first), سوم (third). The ordinal follows its noun with the ezafe: طبقهٔ دوم (the second floor). The form in ـمین goes before the noun: دومین طبقه.
Days and the calendar
The week starts on شنبه: شنبه، یکشنبه، دوشنبه، سهشنبه، چهارشنبه، پنجشنبه، جمعه. جمعه is the day off.
Iran uses the solar hijri calendar. The year begins with نوروز on ۱ فروردین (about 21 March). Months: فروردین، اردیبهشت، خرداد، تیر، مرداد، شهریور، مهر، آبان، آذر، دی، بهمن، اسفند. A date is day, month, year: ۱۵ مهر ۱۴۰۳.
Watch out as an English speaker
- No plural after a number: ✗ سه کتابها / ✓ سه کتاب.
- "Three hundred and five" needs و at every join: ✗ سیصد پنج / ✓ سیصد و پنج.
- "Half past three" is literally "three and a half": ✗ نیم بعد از ۳ / ✓ ساعت ۳ و نیم.
- Use Persian digits in Persian text: ✗ ساعت 5 / ✓ ساعت ۵.
Example dialogue
ساعت چند است؟ — What time is it?
ساعت ۸ و نیم صبح است. — It is half past eight in the morning.
کلاس ساعت چند شروع میشود؟ — What time does the class start?
ساعت ۹، در طبقهٔ سوم. — At nine, on the third floor.
