داشتن (to have)

A present tense without می‌

داشتن is one of the two verbs that build their present tense without می‌ (the other is بودن). The present stem is دار. A few verbs built on it do take می‌: برداشتن (to pick up) → برمی‌دارم, نگه داشتن (to keep, to stop) → نگه می‌دارم.

Person Positive Negative
من دارم (dāram) ندارم
تو داری نداری
او دارد ندارد
ما داریم نداریم
شما دارید ندارید
آن‌ها دارند ندارند
  • من دو برادر دارم. — I have two brothers.
  • او وقت ندارد. — He does not have time.

Past and perfect

The past stem is regular, داشت: داشتم، داشتی، داشت، داشتیم، داشتید، داشتند. The perfect is داشته‌ام, the formal future خواهم داشت.

  • دیروز کلاس داشتم. — I had a class yesterday.
  • هیچ‌وقت ماشین نداشته‌ام. — I have never had a car.

Common expressions built on داشتن

Persian English
دوست داشتن to like, to love
نیاز داشتن به to need
قصد داشتن to intend
حق داشتن to be right
دوست دارم بروم I would like to go
  • من او را دوست دارم. — I love him.
  • به کمک نیاز دارم. — I need help.

These are compound verbs, so the negative goes on دارم: دوست ندارم — I do not like it.

Age

من سی سال دارم. — I am thirty. This is the standard written pattern; in speech you will mostly hear سی سالمه (written out: سی سالم است).

One more job

داشتن also builds the progressive (دارم می‌روم — I am going right now). That is lesson 22.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • Never add می‌ to plain داشتن: ✗ می‌دارم / ✓ دارم.
  • English "have to" is not داشتن: ✗ دارم بروم. / ✓ باید بروم.
  • The English perfect uses "have", Persian does not: ✗ دارم خورده. / ✓ خورده‌ام. (I have eaten)
  • "I like it" is a داشتن phrase: ✗ آن را دوست هستم. / ✓ آن را دوست دارم.

Example dialogue

خواهر یا برادر داری؟ — Do you have a sister or a brother?
یک خواهر دارم، برادر ندارم. — I have one sister, I do not have a brother.
او ماشین دارد؟ — Does she have a car?
نه، ولی دوچرخه دارد و دوچرخه‌اش را خیلی دوست دارد. — No, but she has a bike and she likes her bike a lot.
