Possessive pronouns (bezittelijke voornaamwoorden)

Possessive pronouns show ownership. In Dutch:

Subject Possessive English Example
ik mijn my mijn huis — my house
jij jouw / je your jouw boek — your book
u uw your (formal) uw naam — your name
hij zijn his zijn auto — his car
zij haar her haar kat — her cat
het zijn its zijn kleur — its color
wij ons / onze our ons huis / onze auto
jullie jullie your (pl.) jullie school — your school
zij (they) hun their hun kinderen — their children

Ons vs onze

"Our" has two forms:

Stressed vs unstressed

Some possessives have a short (unstressed) form for everyday speech:

Use the stressed form for emphasis: Dat is mijn boek, niet jouw boek! — That is my book, not your book!
