Three ways to talk about the future
Dutch has three common ways to express the future. The good news: the most common one is the present tense you already know.

Present tense + time adverb (the most common)
If a time word like morgen, straks, volgende week makes the future meaning clear, Dutch simply uses the present tense:
- Ik vertrek morgen naar Parijs. — I am leaving for Paris tomorrow.
- Volgende week beginnen de lessen. — Classes start next week.
- We eten vanavond bij mijn ouders. — We are eating at my parents' place tonight.
Notice the inversion in the second example: when the time expression comes first, the verb still stays in second position.
Gaan + infinitive: plans and intentions
Gaan works like English "going to". Conjugate gaan, and send the infinitive to the end:
- Ik ga een huis kopen. — I am going to buy a house.
- Ga je vanavond koken? — Are you going to cook tonight?
- Het gaat regenen. — It is going to rain.
Use gaan for intentions, plans, and things you can see coming (like the weather).
Zullen + infinitive: promises and predictions
Zullen is the true future auxiliary, but it is less common in everyday speech. Its conjugation: ik zal, jij zult/zal, hij zal, wij zullen, jullie zullen, zij zullen.
Use it for:
- Promises: Ik zal je morgen bellen. — I will call you tomorrow. (I promise)
- Predictions and expectations: Het zal wel lukken. — It will probably work out.
- Formal or written announcements: De winkel zal om 9 uur openen. — The shop will open at 9 o'clock.
- Offers and proposals as a question: Zal ik je helpen? — Shall I help you?
Choosing between them
- Neutral plan with a time word? Use the present tense: Ik kom zaterdag.
- Intention or something visibly coming? Use gaan: We gaan verhuizen.
- Promise, prediction, or offer? Use zullen: Ik zal het niet vergeten. — I will not forget it.
