Contar lo que alguien dijo
- She said, "I am tired." — Dijo: "Estoy cansada".
- She said (that) she was tired. — Dijo que estaba cansada.
Al pasar al estilo indirecto cambian los pronombres (I pasa a she), normalmente el tiempo verbal (am pasa a was) y a veces las expresiones de tiempo y lugar. That se puede omitir.
Retroceso de los tiempos verbales
Cuando el verbo introductor está en pasado (said, told, asked), el verbo de lo que se cuenta suele retroceder un paso. El español hace algo muy parecido ("dijo que estaba cansada"), así que la lógica te resultará familiar:

Si lo dicho sigue siendo cierto en el momento de contarlo, también se puede mantener el presente: He said he works in a bank. (y sigue trabajando allí)

say o tell
- say sin la persona que escucha: She said (that) she was busy.
- tell con la persona que escucha: She told me (that) she was busy.
- Con say también se puede nombrar a la persona, pero con to: She said to me that she was busy. Es menos frecuente.
Preguntas, órdenes y peticiones
En las preguntas indirectas desaparece el orden de pregunta y no se usa do / does / did. Las preguntas de sí o no llevan if o whether:
- "Where do you live?" → He asked me where I lived. — Me preguntó dónde vivía.
- "Are you coming?" → She asked if I was coming. — Me preguntó si venía.
Las órdenes y peticiones se construyen con tell / ask + persona + to + verbo:
- "Close the door." → He told me to close the door. — Me dijo que cerrara la puerta.
- "Please wait." → She asked us to wait. — Nos pidió que esperáramos.
- "Don't be late." → She told us not to be late. — Nos dijo que no llegáramos tarde.
Ojo si hablas español
- "Me dijo" con say. ✗ She said me that she was busy. / ✓ She told me that she was busy.
- El subjuntivo de "que cerrara". Las órdenes indirectas no llevan that + sujeto: ✗ He told me that I close the door. / ✓ He told me to close the door.
- Orden de pregunta en la pregunta indirecta. ✗ He asked me where did I live. / ✓ He asked me where I lived. ✗ Tell me what do you want. / ✓ Tell me what you want.

What did the doctor say? — ¿Qué dijo la médica?
She said I needed more rest. — Dijo que necesitaba descansar más.
Did she tell you to stay at home? — ¿Te dijo que te quedaras en casa?
Yes. She also asked if I was sleeping well. — Sí. También me preguntó si dormía bien.
