Reporting in the present
When the reporting verb is in the present (dice, cuenta, explica), nothing moves. Only the pronouns change.
- "Estoy cansado." → Dice que está cansado. — He says he's tired.
- "Vendré mañana." → Dice que vendrá mañana. — She says she'll come tomorrow.
Que is obligatory and can never be dropped.
Reporting in the past
With dijo, contó, explicó, the verb in the reported clause shifts back one step.

- "Trabajo aquí." → Dijo que trabajaba allí.
- "He terminado." → Dijo que había terminado.
- "Te llamaré." → Dijo que me llamaría.
The imperfect and the conditional do not shift any further: "Estaba cansado" → Dijo que estaba cansado. In everyday speech the preterite often stays too: Dijo que fue al médico.
Commands
An imperative becomes the imperfect subjunctive after a past reporting verb, and the present subjunctive after a present one.
- "¡Ven aquí!" → Me dijo que viniera. — He told me to come.
- "No hables." → Me pidió que no hablara. — She asked me not to speak.
- "¡Llámame!" → Dice que lo llame. — He says I should call him.
Questions
Yes-or-no questions need si. Questions with a question word keep it, accent included, and keep the word order of the question.
- "¿Estás cansado?" → Me preguntó si estaba cansado.
- "¿Dónde vives?" → Me preguntó dónde vivía.
- "¿Cuándo llega el tren?" → Preguntó cuándo llegaba el tren.

- "Llegué ayer." → Dijo que había llegado el día anterior.
Watch out as an English speaker
- Que is never optional. English drops "that" freely. ✗ Dijo él estaba cansado. / ✓ Dijo que estaba cansado.
- A reported command is not an infinitive. ✗ Me dijo venir a las ocho. / ✓ Me dijo que viniera a las ocho.
- Yes-no questions need si. ✗ Me preguntó estaba listo. / ✓ Me preguntó si estaba listo.
- Keep the accent on indirect question words. They stay stressed even without question marks. ✗ No sé donde vive. / ✓ No sé dónde vive.
Example dialogue
¿Qué te dijo Ana? — What did Ana tell you?
Dijo que estaba enferma y que no vendría hoy. — She said she was ill and that she wouldn't come today.
¿Y no explicó qué le pasaba? — And she didn't explain what was wrong?
Me preguntó si podía avisar al jefe. — She asked me if I could tell the boss.
Le dije que descansara. — I told her to rest.
