Making nouns plural

Singular ends in Rule Example
a vowel add -s la casa → las casas, el coche → los coches
a consonant add -es el hotel → los hoteles, la ciudad → las ciudades
-z z → c + -es el lápiz → los lápices, la vez → las veces
stressed -í / -ú usually -es el iraní → los iraníes
unstressed vowel + -s no change el lunes → los lunes, la crisis → las crisis

Watch the written accent. Adding a syllable can remove or add one:

  • la canción → las canciones (accent disappears)
  • el joven → los jóvenes (accent appears)
  • el autobús → los autobuses

A masculine plural can refer to a mixed group: los hermanos = brothers, or brothers and sisters. Los padres = parents.

Adjectives agree with the noun

An adjective takes the gender and number of its noun.

Singular Plural
Adjective in -o (masc.) un chico alto unos chicos altos
Adjective in -o (fem.) una chica alta unas chicas altas
Adjective in -e (both) un libro interesante, una clase interesante libros / clases interesantes
Adjective in consonant (both) un examen fácil, una pregunta fácil exámenes / preguntas fáciles

Adjectives of nationality ending in a consonant, and adjectives in -dor, do add -a: un hombre español, una mujer española; un chico inglés, una chica inglesa; un hombre trabajador, una mujer trabajadora.

With a mix of masculine and feminine nouns, the adjective goes masculine plural: El padre y la madre están cansad*os.*

Position: usually after the noun

Descriptive adjectives normally come after the noun:

  • una casa blanca — a white house
  • un coche nuevo — a new car
  • la comida italiana — Italian food

A few very common adjectives often go before the noun, and some shorten:

Adjective Before a masc. singular noun Example
bueno buen un buen día
malo mal un mal momento
grande gran (before any singular noun) una gran ciudad
primero / tercero primer / tercer el primer piso

Apart from gran, feminine and plural forms don't shorten: una buena idea, unos buenos amigos.

Grande changes meaning with position: un hombre grande (a big man), un gran hombre (a great man).

Watch out as an English speaker

  • Adjective before the noun. English puts the adjective first. ✗ una blanca casa / ✓ una casa blanca. ✗ el italiano restaurante / ✓ el restaurante italiano.
  • Forgetting agreement. English adjectives never change. ✗ las casas blanco / ✓ las casas blancas. ✗ Mi hermana es alto. / ✓ Mi hermana es alta.
  • Plural -s on adjectives too. English marks the plural on the noun only. ✗ los libros interesante / ✓ los libros interesantes.
  • Nationalities are lower case.una chica Inglesa / ✓ una chica inglesa.
