The form
Take the imperative and add the personal endings. It is the present tense with بـ instead of می.
| Person | رفتن | خوردن | کردن |
|---|---|---|---|
| من | بروم | بخورم | بکنم |
| تو | بروی | بخوری | بکنی |
| او | برود | بخورد | بکند |
| ما | برویم | بخوریم | بکنیم |
| شما | بروید | بخورید | بکنید |
| آنها | بروند | بخورند | بکنند |
The negative replaces بـ: نروم، نخوری، نکنند.
Two verbs are irregular: بودن gives باشم، باشی، باشد..., and داشتن uses the participle, داشته باشم.
When you need it
The subjunctive is the form Persian uses wherever English would use "to ...", "that ...", or a modal.
| Trigger | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| باید | باید بروم. | I have to go. |
| میخواهم | میخواهم بخوابم. | I want to sleep. |
| میتوانم | میتوانی بیایی؟ | Can you come? |
| شاید | شاید فردا بیاید. | Maybe he will come tomorrow. |
| بهتر است | بهتر است صبر کنیم. | We had better wait. |
| امیدوارم | امیدوارم خوب باشی. | I hope you are well. |
| purpose که | میروم که او را ببینم. | I am going to see him. |
| اگر | اگر وقت داشته باشم، میآیم. | If I have time, I will come. |
باید never changes: باید بروی، باید برویم، باید بروند.
Compound verbs drop بـ
- باید کار کنم. — I have to work.
- میخواهم صحبت کنم. — I want to talk.
- شاید تلفن بزند. — Maybe he will call.
Two verbs, two endings
Both verbs in the sentence are conjugated, and both point at the same person:
- میخواهم بروم. — literally "I want I go".
- میخواهد برود. — He wants to go.
- میخواهم که تو بروی. — I want you to go.
Watch out as an English speaker
- There is no infinitive after a modal: ✗ میخواهم رفتن. / ✓ میخواهم بروم.
- باید takes the subjunctive, not the present: ✗ باید میروم. / ✓ باید بروم.
- Same after میتوانم: ✗ میتوانم میآیم. / ✓ میتوانم بیایم.
- داشتن is irregular here: ✗ باید دارم. / ✓ باید داشته باشم.
