Participle plus باشم

The past subjunctive is the past participle followed by the subjunctive of بودن. It talks about a finished action that is uncertain, hoped for, or deduced.

Person Form English
من رفته باشم (that) I have gone
تو رفته باشی (that) you have gone
او رفته باشد (that) he has gone
ما رفته باشیم (that) we have gone
شما رفته باشید (that) you have gone
آن‌ها رفته باشند (that) they have gone

The negative is on the participle: نرفته باشم، ندیده باشد. Compound verbs: کار کرده باشم, تلفن نزده باشد.

Where it appears

Everywhere the present subjunctive appears, but pointing at the past:

Trigger Present subjunctive Past subjunctive
شاید شاید بیاید. — Maybe he will come. شاید آمده باشد. — Maybe he has come.
باید باید برود. — He must go. باید رفته باشد. — He must have gone.
امیدوارم امیدوارم برسی. — I hope you arrive. امیدوارم رسیده باشی. — I hope you have arrived.
ممکن است ممکن است ببیند. ممکن است ندیده باشد. — He may not have seen it.
فکر نمی‌کنم فکر نمی‌کنم بیاید. فکر نمی‌کنم آمده باشد.
اگر اگر بیاید اگر آمده باشد، به ما می‌گوید.

باید with two meanings

باید + present subjunctive is an obligation. باید + past subjunctive is a deduction about the past, English "must have":

  • باید بروی. — You have to go.
  • باید رفته باشد، چون چراغ خاموش است. — He must have gone, because the light is off.

Not the same as the perfect

رفته است states a fact: he has gone. رفته باشد leaves it open: he may have gone. The difference is the verb بودن, in its indicative or subjunctive form.

Watch out as an English speaker

  • "Must have gone" is not a past tense: ✗ باید رفت. / ✓ باید رفته باشد.
  • For uncertainty about the past, written Persian uses this form: شاید رفته باشد. The simple past شاید رفت. is also heard, especially in speech, so it is informal rather than wrong.
  • After امیدوارم English uses an ordinary tense; Persian does not: ✗ امیدوارم رسیده‌ای. / ✓ امیدوارم رسیده باشی.
  • Only باشم takes the ending: ✗ رفته‌ام باشم / ✓ رفته باشم.

Example dialogue

چرا جواب نمی‌دهد؟ — Why doesn't he answer?
شاید خوابیده باشد. — Maybe he has fallen asleep.
یا شاید پیام را ندیده باشد. — Or maybe he hasn't seen the message.
امیدوارم مشکلی پیش نیامده باشد. — I hope nothing has gone wrong.
